Jersey sommelier reaches finals of top UK wine waiter competition.

The sommelier of Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel has reached the finals of the 2012 Moet UK Sommelier of the Year competition. Sergio dos Santos is the only Channel Islands representative at this level of the competition which includes sommeliers from Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal’s restaurants.

Organised by the Academy of Food and Wine Service, the event requires entrants to complete tasks including a blind tasting, a champagne pouring and a knowledge test.

Originally from Brittany; Sergio, joined The Atlantic Hotel in 2007 after working in several five star hotels including Chewton Glen, Hampshire and The Majestic, Cannes.  The Atlantic’s restaurant Ocean gained a Michelin star the same year under executive head chef, Mark Jordan.

Patrick Burke, Owner and Managing Director of The Atlantic, said “Sergio is a fantastic sommelier with an incredible knowledge of wines at his fingertips. From his work at our Michelin-starred restaurant, Ocean, we know first-hand how much he deserves to be in the final of this prestigious competition and we are both delighted and proud of what he has already achieved. We hope that this is the year he takes the title and gains the additional recognition that he so richly deserves.”

The winner of the event will also qualify for The European Sommelier of the Year competition.
